Aurora’s Tesla felt like a wonderful sanctuary when I climbed back in to go home. After we pulled out of Sandy Ridge, she shook her head. “I don’t understand why so many of those women are such grumps. I wake up every day with a smile on my face. There’s so much to be happy about.”

“I know. I figured that gardening would make those women joyful.”

“Apparently not,” said Aurora.

“Apparently not,” I repeated. “Unfortunately, I don’t have any sense of whether Kathy Elliott killed JJ or not.”

Aurora topped at a light. She drummed her fingers on the steering wheel lightly. The sun glinted off of her diamond. I know the size of it because I asked, and it’s definitely huge. Small pink diamonds encircle the larger central stone. I have noticed that large diamonds earn you a certain amount of respect here in South Florida. It’s a symbol that you or your spouse has made it.

“I don’t think Kathy did it,” said Aurora when the light changed. “I talked with Anita Colliers. She saw Kathy drive the golf cart up to the clubhouse, and Tiffany Drummond saw Kathy go inside. Tiffany even asked the manager of the golf shop whether Kathy was in the ladies room the whole time, and he said she was.”

Since I wasn’t driving, it was easy enough to pull my phone out of my bag. I crossed Kathy Elliott off of our suspect list.

“Did you get the chance to talk to Gerta?” I asked.

“Only for a minute. She’s still under suspicion and the club hasn’t lifted her ban. The only reason Franz hasn’t started the divorce proceedings is because his attorney is vacationing in Aruba. She worries that when the lawyer gets back to the US, Franz will start the divorce proceedings.”

“That’s awful,” I said.

“Isn’t it? At least the visit wasn’t a total bust,” said Aurora. “You got a little business out of it. The sale should do well for the club and for your store. That knapsack was a big hit.”

She was right. Inside the bag were six orders for more sacks. Plus, I’d had the idea to downsize the bags for bikers and gardeners. I was eager to show EveLynn the new orders and to praise the girl.

I’m never sure how much praise really matters to EveLynn, but I have to believe that she can absorb some of the compliments I send her way. Besides, it’s the intention that counts, not the outcome. Even if the emotions don’t reach her the same way they touch Skye or me, I can’t help but believe EveLynn finds pleasure in them. Even if she can only respond to my positive comments logically, I want to believe that an accumulation of positive strokes shows up as checkmarks in her mental tabulations.,

Aurora added, “You really had to work for their approval, didn’t you? That doesn’t seem fair to me. Kathy Elliott was so reluctant to let you help the club with their plant sale.”

I grumbled. “Honest to goodness. Did she
